Guided Pronghorn Hunts vs. DIY Hunts – Which is Better?
Many hunters debate between booking a guided pronghorn hunt in Colorado and attempting a DIY (Do-It-Yourself) hunt. While both options offer unique experiences, a guided hunt significantly increases your chances of success, especially for non-residents or first-time pronghorn hunters.
Advantages of a Guided Pronghorn Hunt
- Expert Local Knowledge: Our guides have years of experience tracking pronghorn in Colorado’s diverse terrain. They know where herds congregate, how pronghorn respond to different weather conditions, and the best strategies for a clean shot.
- Pre-Scouted Areas: Unlike DIY hunters who spend valuable hunting time searching for animals, our guides scout the best locations in advance, ensuring you start the hunt in prime spots.
- Access to Private Land: DIY hunters often compete with other hunters on public land, making it difficult to find undisturbed pronghorn. With Loco Mountain Outfitters, you gain exclusive access to private ranches, increasing your chances of encountering trophy pronghorns.
- Logistics Handled for You: A guided hunt eliminates the need to plan complex logistics, from acquiring land access to navigating licensing requirements. We handle lodging, meals, transportation, and field dressing, so you can focus on the hunt.
- Higher Success Rates: While DIY success rates vary widely, guided hunts at Loco Mountain Outfitters boast a nearly 100% success rate, making it the best choice for hunters serious about harvesting a pronghorn.
Challenges of a DIY Pronghorn Hunt
- Difficult Tag Draws: Many prime Colorado pronghorn hunting units require preference points, meaning non-residents often struggle to obtain tags for the best areas.
- Land Access Issues: Public lands can be overcrowded, forcing hunters to hike miles to find an unpressured pronghorn herd.
- Limited Hunting Time: Without a guide, finding and stalking pronghorn takes longer, reducing overall hunting time.
- Mistakes in Field Judging Pronghorns: Spotting and correctly judging a trophy pronghorn from a distance is challenging for an inexperienced hunter.
By choosing a guided pronghorn hunt in Colorado, you maximize your time in the field and significantly increase your odds of success while enjoying a stress-free, fully planned hunt.
Pronghorn Hunting License & Tags in Colorado
To hunt pronghorn antelope in Colorado, hunters must apply for a big game license through Colorado Parks & Wildlife. Our team can assist with the licensing process and provide guidance on the best hunt units for your tag application.
- Limited Entry Tags – Pronghorn tags are allocated via a draw system, with preference points increasing your chances.
- Over-the-Counter (OTC) Options – Some private land tags may be available without the draw process.
